The Fewster Cecchetti Scholarship
for students of the Cecchetti Method
The annual Fewster Cecchetti Scholarship takes place as part of the Cecchetti Classical Ballet Awards. An award of £1000 is made in the Autumn each year to a female or male Cecchetti student who is attending either a vocational school, or a further or higher educational establishment. A special award of £100, donated personally by Barbara Fewster, is made to a promising male student, should he not win the scholarship. Applicants are required to participate in a classical ballet class at the Cecchetti Classical Ballet Awards which is watched by two Adjudicators, one of whom will be a Professional Dancer or Ballet Master/Mistress, and the other will be a representative of the Cecchetti Society. The event is open to the public.
Eligibility
Candidates must:
- either have passed the Cecchetti Intermediate Examination (previously entitled Elementary) or be studying the Cecchetti Method
- be recommended by the Head of Dance or the Ballet Principal of the school or college which they attend. ( A maximum of six students will be accepted from any one school )
- be committed to continuing their studies in their school or college for not less than one year
- continue studying the Cecchetti Method either as part of their normal course or by attending classes at the Cecchetti Centre on a regular basis
- be a minimum 15 years by 1st September of the year of the award and still in training at a vocational school, or at a further, or higher educational establishment
Payment
The award will be paid as follows:
- £100 will be paid immediately on the day of the award
- £300 will be paid at the end of each term, in the academic year of the award, on receipt of a letter from the student's Cecchetti teacher confirming that the student has continued with her/his studies of the Method during that term
- In the event of the student being unable to fulfil the above condition the award will be withheld and the situation will be considered by the Cecchetti Society Committee, taking into account alternatives such as attendance at one of the Cecchetti Summer Schools, or undertaking Cecchetti teaching qualifications which may be at the end of a performance career
