Wales & the West Cecchetti Associates
The Associate classes were set up in 1998 for dancers to benefit from the expertise of teachers of all dance genres. Auditions are held in September each year and these and classes are held at the Ballet Cymru Studios, Rogerstone, Newport, Wales. A ballet class is followed by a specialist class of either character, Spanish, contemporary, musical theatre, jazz, classical repertoire, Greek or lyrical dance. The dancers are always enthusiastic and classes are accompanied by Penny Hughes, our regular pianist who always inspires the dancers. At the end of the year, during the summer term, all dancers are treated to a workshop day with the locally based Independent Ballet Wales when Artistic Director, Darius James, and his accomplished company take the children through a ballet class followed by a repertoire class. A few days later, a visit to the Riverfront Theatre in Newport is enjoyed by all as the company perform their current ballet to our eager students.
The teachers come from far and wide and have included Melanie Bull, Amy Doughty, Brenda Garrett-Glassman, Jenny Hawcroft, Josephine Holling, Darius James, Gillian Robinson, Kirsty Williams, Judith Wilson and Linda Young. They are always made welcome and are regularly asked to return. The benefit of the students experiencing different teachers is very evident as they become stronger and more confident as the year progresses. There are now almost 80 young students attending these classes. Classes are held three times a term on Sundays. There is a tuition fee for Wales & the West Cecchetti Associates.
